Students complete Duke of Edinburgh award expedition

Six TCA students took part in an expedition as part of their work towards the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award.

Six TCA students took part in an expedition as part of their work towards the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award.

The students spent a day in school preparing before setting off to complete the expedition over a weekend in August.

Teacher Lucy-Beth Heighton, who is leading the D of E scheme at TCA, said the group had enjoyed the expedition and had passed this stage of the award with flying colours.

Miss Heighton said: “The assessor was really impressed with the group and determined early on that they were clearly very competent.

“They have come a long way since their practise expedition, they didn’t get lost and were able to overcome obstacles of missing footpaths by reassessing their routes and taking alternative pathways.

“Their aim was to assess the human impact on footpaths by completing a survey which including recording litter and asking other walkers about their experiences.

“I’m very proud of them and they’re proud of themselves.”

The six students are the first ever D of E group from TCA. Students are now being invited to put themselves forward to be part of the next group to start work on the Bronze, while the students who complete Bronze will be able to progress to the Silver this year.

The Bronze D of E programme has four sections - Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Expedition.

Students must do a minimum of three months activity for each of the Volunteering, Physical and Skills sections, dedicate an additional three months on one of these three sections and plan, train for and do a two day (one night) Expedition.
