Prizes for our top student poets

Four students who impressed with their own original poetry have been named the winners of a competition.

Four students who impressed with their own original poetry have been named the winners of a competition.

Year 10 student Molly-Mae Taylor was named the overall winner for her poem which was about a pregnancy.

She said: “My poem was 40 lines long and was separated into the trimesters. I wrote it to be quite repetitive with the start of each line so I began them with ‘week 1’, ‘week 2’ and so on.”

Year 10 student Elizabeth Kenealy was second with her poem about a rocket and Daniel Putteril and Jack Fowler, who are in years 8 and 11, were named jointly in third place.

Daniel wrote his poem about a day at the beach in Hunstanton. He said: “I wrote about the different things you do at the beach, like having an ice cream. I have written some poems before, I really enjoy it. I was really pleased to get a prize.”

Jack’s poem was about a poor man who wins the lottery. He said: “I wanted to base it on something which could be true to life. In my poem this man worked in a factory and bought a ticket, and when he won he got carried away and spent it all, so he came back to the factory.

“The poem was all about what he wanted to spend the money on. It was the first poem I have ever written, I would definitely write more poems because it will help me to improve my skills for my English GCSE.”

The four prize winners will help with the running of a visit by rap poet Donavan Christopher on Wednesday (September 18th).

They will be awarded with their prizes from the competition at an awards evening in October.
