Students headed to the National Gallery this week for a sketching master-class inspired by the works of some of the world’s greatest artists.

A group of 34 Year 10 and 11 students who are studying BTEC and GCSE art went along to the famous gallery in London’s Trafalgar Square on May 5th.

They were asked to sketch some of the world’s most famous paintings, such as Van Gogh’s Sunflowers during the session and were taught some new drawing skills by one of the gallery’s personal tutors.

The students also visited Covent Garden and looked around the arts and crafts stalls in the renowned market.

Art teacher Mrs Murphy, who organised the trip said: “The students were really impressed by the gallery. I wanted to go so that they could experience viewing art within a gallery and also soak up the atmosphere.

“As part of their studies they have do research on individual artists and this trip has helped them to learn more about different types of artist and periods of art.

“They are also looking at cultures and the visit to London was also a great cultural experience.”
