Maths Rock Wrangle

Year 7 and 8 maths students battled it out to become the ultimate times-tables rock god in the first ever TCA rock wrangle.

The maths department has been using online maths programme Rockstars to help students quicken up their times-tables skills. All Year 7 and 8s have been using the programme in lesson times and at home and the top 30 students went head to head in the TCA Rock Wrangle to find out who was fastest and most accurate.

They had to answer a series of sets of questions and were scored on whether they got the question correct and how quickly.

Year 8 student Rachael Stimpson (pictured above) was crowned the winner with a mean speed of 1.325 seconds per question with Ricards Popovics (mean speed – 1.695) and Thomas Skuse (mean speed – 1.765) following close behind. Rachael only got one question wrong.

Head of maths Liz Taylor said: “Rockstars is a great programme that helps students to quicken up their times-tables so that they become automatic. Times-tables are an essential skills that when mastered helps with the rest of their maths.

“We had fun with the Rock Wrangle as we played rock music when the students came in and then had some air guitar competitions when the tests were being marked.

“We hope to make it an even bigger event next year.”
