Year 8 student Charlotte Cameron is set to represent England in kickboxing competitions in Ireland and Italy.

Charlotte, who is a member of our Madiba Learning Community, was invited to train with the British and Chinese Kickboxing Association (BCKA) Team England in July and joined the team in September.

Charlotte became a national champion in May when she was named Under-50kg advanced girls continuous champion at the national championships in Corby.

Charlotte was also named intermediate champion in the Under-55kg continuous category at the Boston Series Championship recently.

She has now been selected to represent her country in the Irish Open, which will take place in Dublin in March, and is also set to compete in the World Kickboxing Club’s 5th World Championships in October next year in Italy. The two events will be Charlotte’s first competitions outside of the United Kingdom.

Charlotte is currently a Purple belt in her sport – just three belts away from Black belt.

She began kickboxing two years ago after looking for something to do during the summer holidays while she was in primary school.

She said: “It was nearing the end of the summer holidays and I was a bit bored, then I saw a leaflet for kickboxing. After the first three training sessions I thought ‘I want to carry on’.

“I love how I have made so many friends, and if I have had a bad day I can take it out on the pads.”

For the first six months Charlotte did kickboxing she did one session a week but as she started progressing, she increased her training and she now goes to kickboxing on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Charlotte said: “My friends and family are amazing – when they found out I was going to Ireland they were brilliant.

“I want to go because I want to prove myself.”
