Sam decided on a fundraising bike ride to help the Arthur Rank Hospice, which operates a treatment centre in Wisbech, and pledged to ride 36 miles over five days to achieve his ambition.

The Year 10 pupil is a keen cyclist and decided on the distance as it represented one mile for every 32 people helped by the charity every year. The Alan Hudson Treatment Centre in Wisbech, at the North Cambridgeshire Hospital, is operated by the organisation.

“Recently, one of my family members was diagnosed with cancer and the Wisbech centre has been helping them,” said Sam, 14, who raised £812.

He was easy to spot during his daily ride over the half term break as he wore an Arthur Rank Hospice branded tee shirt so everyone could see he was fundraising.

“I might do something else to raise more money later on,” he said.

The charity offers free hospice care in Cambridge, hospice at home care across Cambridgeshire and specialist care services including therapy teams and family support.

The Alan Hudson centre was rated as Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission following an inspection in 2022. 

The report highlighted the compassion and kindness of staff, saying carers went ‘above and beyond what would have been expected to meet individual needs and wishes.’
