Fundraising Frank is nominated for an award for his efforts

Year 7 student Frank Etherington has been nominated for an award after raising more than £1,000 for Wisbech Rugby Club.

Year 7 student Frank Etherington has been nominated for an award after raising more than £1,000 for Wisbech Rugby Club.

Frank has made it through to the final of the Young People of the Year Awards, known as the YOPEY Awards. The final will take place on Wednesday, October 3, at Ely Cathedral.

His fundraising work has included him taking part in a 26.2 mile walk in the Peak District, which took him 9 hours and 53 minutes to complete. Frank raised more than £400.

Frank also helps out at the club every weekend.

He said: “I play there in the Under 12’s and I have been playing there for about seven years. My Dad is the Chairman and my Mum is the Caterer. It’s my second home.

“I have been going round with the bucket at home games to collect money – my luckiest one was when I found a 20p with no date on, I got £60 for that when I sold it on eBay.”

Frank used the money he raised by taking part in the 26.2 mile walk to help to improve facilities for visitors to the club.

He said: “With the money I got for the walk I bought a baby changing facility. There’s older teams of fully grown men at the club so there’s more kids coming up and there wasn’t a baby changing facility so I bought that. I also bought some whiteboards to write information on.”

Even when he isn’t busy fundraising, Frank chips in in any way he can at the club.

He said: “I do little jobs like giving orange juice to the first and second team, being the water boy and ball boy.

“I rarely miss a game."

Frank is allowed to take 10 guests to the Young People of the Year Awards final and will be accompanied by family members, one of his coaches and Gerwyn Williams, Head of Frank’s Learning Community, Pankhurst.

Frank's nomination has also been covered by the Wisbech Standard.
