Revamped PE lessons pack a punch

A new style of PE lessons for Year 10 and 11 girls is proving a great hit, with boxercise, Zumba and circuits now on the timetable alongside more traditional sports like netball and hockey.

A new style of PE lessons for Year 10 and 11 girls is proving a great hit, with boxercise, Zumba and circuits now on the timetable alongside more traditional sports like netball and hockey.

Research conducted by the Academy’s PE staff highlighted that some girls were more engaged with fitness-style lessons rather than traditional games.

At the end of last year students chose their preferred options, and the PE curriculum now includes a wider variety of lessons, including badminton, climbing, boxercise, netball, aerobics, Zumba, step, Insanity and circuits.

PE teacher Amy Anderson said: “The girls have worked hard and are enjoying the revamped curriculum, with many saying that they are looking forward to PE now, rather than dreading it!

“It’s great to see the girls’ motivation for PE being recaptured, as this encourages them to lead healthy, active lifestyles once they leave compulsory education.

“The girls who enjoy the traditional sports such as netball, hockey and rounders still have the opportunity to study these sports, so it really is a curriculum for all.”
