The importance of wearing correct school uniform has been highlighted at Thomas Clarkson Academy over the last few weeks.

Our uniform reflects the professional attitude we expect from our students and was chosen after consultation with our school council, staff and uniform professionals. Our business-like and purposeful attitude is encapsulated in our smart uniform.

Principal Clare Claxton said: “When students are in the same uniform and respectful of the academy’s simple rules, the entire energies of staff can focus on student achievement. Getting the best from our students is at the heart of everything we do.”

We asked students for their opinions on the school uniform and this is what they told us:

Head boy Akshay Kishor said: “The uniform shows that the students are one body. It promotes equality and reduces bullying. The business dress we were in the sixth form prepares you for the business world and is a nice graduation from school uniform.”

Inesa Mareckaite, Year 8, said: “I like it. It is better with uniform because you are all the same. People won’t laugh at you because of what you are wearing.”

Karolina Dilyte, Year 8, said: “It’s smart. There’s no problem choosing what to wear and everyone looks the same.”

Jacob Cislea, Year 8, said: “I like the uniform as it is easy to put on and has lots of pockets to put your things in. I like the ties because they look smart.”

Tate Collis, Year 8, said: “The uniform makes you feel part of a community and prepares you for when you go for a job. It makes you realise how important it is for when you are older.”

The local business community is also in favour of school uniform because it ensures students are not discriminated against due to what they wear and prepares them for the world of work.

Kevin Smith, President of Wisbech and District Chamber of Commerce, said: “School uniform is very important. It puts everyone on the same level, despite their background, and students are all presented the same way. It does prepare you for life too. We all have a uniform at work, whether it is formal or not, and that image goes with you wherever you are in the town.”
