BWT competition winners meet children’s author

Winners of a writing competition between students at schools across the Brooke Weston Trust were presented with their prizes by a famous writer.

Winners of a writing competition between students at schools across the Brooke Weston Trust were presented with their prizes by a famous writer.

Julian Sedgwick had the honour of handing out the prizes to the winners of the If I Ruled the World writing competition when he visited our school on Wednesday, March 18th.

The author, who spent a day at the school working with Year 8s, presented the first prize Kindle gifts to TCA Year 8 student Anna Ivaskevia (pictured) and Ellie Thompson from Peckover Primary School.

Students from Corby Business Academy, Beanfield Primary Academy and Gretton Primary Academy also took part.

TCA Librarian Debbie Trafford, who organised the competition said: “We were delighted by the enthusiastic response from our schools, especially the Primary Schools, and it was a pleasure to work with them. We used the theme as a stimulus for creative writing and received a very high standard of entries. Having author Julian Sedgwick present the prizes was a perfect finale. Having him juggle knives in assembly was the icing on the cake!”

Assistant Principal at Gretton Primary Academy Sarah Sands said: “The whole school took part in a BIG write using the theme as a stimulus. We launched the competition in a special assembly. The children loved the theme and it provided a good opportunity for drama, talk and of course writing.”

The author made his visit as part of his Mysterium tour. The winners and the runners up in the competition were given a copy of one of Julian Sedgwick’s book as a prize.

The judging panel comprised Margaret Barwell from Wisbech Rotary Club, Louise Aldridge from Cambridgeshire Public Libraries and Alison Tarrant who is librarian at Cambourne Village College.
