Poetic inspiration has taken over the academy today (Jan 12th) as we have been privileged to have two published poets working with students.

Fenland Poet Laureaute Jonathan Totman and performance poet Ash Dickinson have been inspiring our students with interactive workshops which have encouraged our students to have fun with poetry and enhance their own creative skills.

The Fenland Poet laureate took two lessons with students and tasked them with the writing about themselves using metaphors; writing a Haiku (a traditional form of Japanese poetry) and a writing exercise to write a poem recycling words to give them different meanings.

He said: “What the students produced in such a sort time was incredible. As part of my role as Fenland Poet Laureaute I want to encourage more young people to write poetry and

Student Elle Burton said: “I loved the lesson with Jonathan as I am really passionate about poetry. His lesson will really help my poetry writing and he made you think about things from a different perspective.”

Ash Dickinson held a series of performances in the theatre, talking to students about poetry and performing some of his own creations.

He said: “What I want the students to get out of today is for students to say ‘Poetry is more fun than I thought it was.’ It would be brilliant if someone went home after today and wrote poetry. As well as being a comfort it can also be a cathartic experience.”

Today also saw the winners from the Brooke Weston Trust poetry competition receive their prizes. Students from across the Trust schools took part in the event, which was sponsored by the Wisbech Rotary Club. The winners were presented with their awards by Chris Mackett and Margaret Barwell from the rotary club.
