Two year 9 students had the experience of a lifetime when they took part in an archaeological dig.

East Rudham in Norfolk was the venue for the exciting three day event which was run by Cambridge University.

Students Gvidas Grikietis and Anna Ivaskevica joined fellow students from Fakenham Academy, Alderman Peel High School, Cromer Academy and Litcham High School at the event this week.

History teacher Jacob Keet who went accompanied the students with fellow teacher Manuela Baverstock said: “It was a fantastic experience and the students found lots of Medieval pottery, Victorian plates, a Victorian belt buckle and animal bones.  The dig and its findings all contribute to a wider picture of how East Anglia has been settled over the last 2000 plus years – this was the first time that there had been digging in East Rudham so it was pioneer territory!”

On the third day the students attended lectures at Cambridge University about medieval settlement studies. They also had a tour of some colleges.

Mr Keet said: “As part of the event the students have to write a 1500 word report that is marked by Cambridge University and has undergraduate level expectations in presentation and research.”
