Well done to our amazing Year 8 rugby team who have staged an amazing comeback, from losing all their games last year, to an unbeaten record this year that has meant they are Isle of Ely champions.

The boys, coached by teacher Bruno Porfirio, have showed excellent progression, dedication and sportsmanship and had some very impressive scorelines against opponents from Witchford, Ely and Neale Wade Academies.

Mr Porfirio said: ‘I started with them in Year 7 and it was quite a difficult year because the majority hadn’t played rugby before so we lost every single game. However they were so keen and came to every single training session. I saw so much potential in them and promised them an extra prize if they won all six of their games.

‘I am so proud of them. It shows that when you work hard it pays off and this was a real achievement. The more time you dedicate the more you achieve and improve. They are a really classy team, with good team spirit and they help each other.

‘In Year 7 we had to teach them everything but now, in Year 8, we start to see their potential and are getting more out of them. Our best try scorer is really fast and athletic so our main objective in training is not only thinking about the group, but also the skills of the individuals..

‘Next year they will progress from 12 to the full 15 a side and the rules will be different as well so they will have to adapt. It is one of our aims to foster sporting, as well as academic achievement and this team, captained by Danny Grieve, is definitely one to watch!’
