Year 11 student Jack Friend made history at the weekend when he became the youngest player to score for Wisbech Town.

Jack, 16, scored his goal in the 89th minute of his debut game for the club on Saturday against Thetford Town. The match ended 4-1 to Wisbech Town, known as the Fenmen. The club play in the Thurlow Nunn league, the Eastern Counties football league.

Jack, who is a member of the King learning community, said: “It was mad to play for Wisbech Town, I have watched them lots of times in the past. I had quite a few family and friends who came to watch, there were more than 200 people there, I’d never played in front of that many before.

“I definitely wasn’t expecting to score, it was awesome. I picked up the ball near the edge of the box, took on a couple of players and slotted in the bottom corner. I couldn’t believe it when I scored, I was gobsmacked.”

Jack has been playing football since he was five-years-old but has only been involved with Wisbech Town FC for around six months.

He said: “Everyone at school has been saying ‘well done’ and the teachers have been coming up to me and congratulating me.”

As well as becoming the club’s youngest goalscorer on Saturday, Jack also made history as the Fenmen’s youngest-ever first-team player.
