Student donates hair to young cancer patients

Brave Year 10 student Gertruda Dambrauskaite has had her shoulder-length hair shaved off and has donated it to a charity which makes wigs for young cancer patients.

Brave Year 10 student Gertruda Dambrauskaite has had her shoulder-length hair shaved off and has donated it to a charity which makes wigs for young cancer patients.

The Little Princess Trust provides real-hair wigs, free of charge, to boys and girls across the UK and Ireland that have lost their own hair through cancer treatment.

Gertruda said she decided to take the bold step after losing her grandmother to cancer and knowing how insecure she had felt when she lost her hair.

She said: β€œI was thinking about it for quite a while but never thought I could do it. Me and my friend were talking about it and I decided it was about time. When it was cut off there was so much hair!”

Family, friends and teachers were surprised to see Gertruda with short hair but are proud of what she has done.

She said: β€œIt makes me feel good to know it is helping young children and that makes it all worthwhile.”

Gertruda is now planning to grow her grade 3 cut so she can have long hair again.
