Miss Rose completes 80-mile walking challenge in 12 days

Maths teacher Miss Rose walked 80 miles in 12 days to raise money for the two charities close to her heart, the RAF Benevolent Fund and the Air Cadets.

Miss Rose, who served as an avionics technician with the RAF for 13 years and is the Training Officer for Holbeach Air Cadets, embarked on the 80 miles in 80 days challenge in celebration of the Air Training Corps 80th anniversary. She was averaging around six to seven miles a day, with longer walks covering around 13 miles.

She started walking the first lockdown and has continued, with two more walking challenges lined up — walking the equivalent of Land’s End to John O’Groats and completing 50 miles in 7 days for the Virtual Montane Lakeland 50. So far, she has walked 534 miles of the 874 miles required to cover the Land’s End challenge.

Miss Rose wanted to support the two charities she been involved with the Air Cadets for 18 years, and her brother, a former RAF serviceman, was medically discharged due to an arm and shoulder injury.

She said: “The challenges helped to get me out of the house during the lockdowns, and being out and about gives you a sense of freedom. It brings a sense of normality. I also thought it would be good to be fit in case I did get COVID. I walked nearly 50 miles during the last half term.”

Miss Rose is also TCA’s co-ordinator for the Brooke Weston Trust’s Combined Cadet Force, although activities are currently on hold due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The money she raises will be split equally between the two charities, with funds for the Air Cadets used to support financially challenged cadets achieve their goals.

“The benefits of joining the Air Cadets for young people is that it develops their confidence, independence, leadership skills and teamwork,” said Miss Rose.
