Competition success for maths students

Young mathematicians have been celebrating after stellar performances recently in tough competitions.

Members of the sixth form gave an excellent showing of their abilities in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge, with silver certificates awarded to Klavs, Lily and Gvido.

And there was huge success for students taking part in the UKMT Mathematical Olympiad for Girls, with two students achieving a Merit.

“I am so proud of the girls who have taken on the challenge of very difficult mathematical problems and have done the school proud,” said Mrs Stevenson, numeracy co-ordinator and maths teacher.

In the Senior Maths Challenge, only the top 66 per cent receive a bronze, silver or gold award. In the girls’ Olympiad, achieving a Merit needed a score of more than 16 in this year’s threshold.

The UKMT has been created to advance student’s education in maths and, as part of the work it does, organises maths competitions both nationally and internationally.
