Insight Into Careers In Engineering

A trip to an engineering firm held in conjunction with the University of Cambridge encouraged students to consider the career pathways into the field of engineering.

A group of 13 Year 10 engineering students visited Metalcraft in Chatteris as part of a joint event with the university’s engineering department.

The day started with a bridge-building exercise in which students had to construct a suspension bridge out of basic materials which was able to support a box of cans.

Next they heard from staff from the University of Cambridge about the range of jobs in the field of engineering, including mechanical, civil and electrical, along with details of what they could expect to earn in this industry. A spokesman from Metalcraft then talked to students about apprenticeships as an alternative route into engineering and what they could expect to earn.

In the afternoon, students were taken on a tour of the site to see the sort of contracts the firm has and the work they carry out.
