SEND

As Thomas Clarkson Academy enters new and exciting times, it remains dedicated to ensuring the inclusion, development and progress of all students. We believe that supporting, encouraging and challenging all learners including those with special educational needs, with English as an Additional Language and those who are gifted and talented, is of paramount importance.

Cooper Centre

On site, we have an Enhanced Resource Provision called the Cooper Centre, which is dedicated to the education and well-being of some students who have an Education, Health and Care Plan. Normally, students are taught in small mixed year classes in either Key Stage Three or Four. About half their timetable comprises of english, maths and topic work. Students attend a wide range of mainstream lessons, including science, geography, history, art, drama and PE. The Cooper Centre has a team of committed teachers and teaching assistants, and the latter also support the students when they attend lessons outside of the Cooper Centre. This nurturing environment ensures that the students reach their potential, whilst developing self-confidence and resilience by using facilities such as the Restaurant and Eden.

We have partnered with Norfolk County Council’s TITAN (Travel Independence Training across Norfolk) team and are currently delivering the Ready to Go! travel training programme to our students. TITAN offers young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) support to help them to become confident independent travellers. The Ready to Go! programme is a flexible framework for students from Year 7 onwards and teaches six core modules:

The skills that the TITAN training provides have a holistic, positive impact across the whole of the young person’s life. Once completed, TITAN can support our students to transition to independently travelling to and from school or college, where appropriate.
